Unique ways high-capacity donors can make a greater impact
By Courtney Hamilton, Associate Creative Director
When it comes to nonprofit fundraising, mid-major donors present a unique and rewarding opportunity. These individuals typically have a higher giving capacity and respond well to personalized, innovative appeals that extend beyond traditional asks.
A standard fundraising letter might inspire many, but mid-major donors often seek a deeper, more tangible connection to the impact their gift can make. Here’s how your nonprofit can craft creative, out-of-the-box offers to inspire greater generosity in your mid-major appeals.
Treat Your Mid-Major Donors Like They Matter… Because They Do!
Unlike mass donor fundraising campaigns, mid-major appeals target donors with a known higher capacity to give. These donors have demonstrated they are comfortable giving gifts ranging from $1,000 to $10,000+.
These donors appreciate seeing the direct, tangible results of their generosity. Offering unique, specific and innovative giving opportunities helps connect their generosity to impactful outcomes… and helps you create long-lasting relationships with these supporters.
Creative Offers for Mid-Major Donors
Once you’ve identified your mid-major audience, the next step is to develop an engaging offer that aligns with their values and capacity to give generously.
Appeal to mid-major donors by clearly identifying urgent and/or specific needs. Rather than a generic request for general funds, specify exactly how donations will be used.
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking…
- Facility Upgrades
- Will a gift of $10,000 sponsor renovations to 1 bathroom?
- Do you need to buy a new industrial fridge for your kitchen?
- Are you in need of security cameras and infrastructure to promote safety?
- Transportation Needs
- Do you need a new bus to transport guests to job interviews and appointments?
- Does your staff need vans to pick up or transport food and in-kind donations?

- Program Sponsorship
- How much will it cost to fund a program resident for 1 month? A year? The full length of your life-recovery program?
- Do you need to subsidize housing for graduates to support their stability long-term?
- Matching Challenge Funds
- If you can’t identify any pressing, specific needs for funding, consider inviting major donors to supply a grant for a future matching challenge. The funds they provide can be used to “match” or “double in impact” the donations of your mass donors.
What’s your organization’s “pie-in-the-sky” wish list item to fund? Start there, get specific and craft your mid-major fundraising offer around it.
Mid-Majors & Multi-Channel Integration
When you think of mid-major appeals, you likely think of direct mail: Elegant brochures. Beautiful, full-color prospectuses. Engaging bouncebacks. Thick, high quality paper.
These are important components of any mid-major appeal, but your strategy to reach mid-majors should go beyond them. Consider layering email fundraising appeals along with your print mailings. And get creative with the print mailings you do send!
Here are a few ways we’ve helped clients expand their impact through multi-channel mid-major strategies:
- Integrated Email Campaigns: Including a tailored email series alongside a print appeal can build emotional connection, expand storytelling space and boost response. Adding an interactive element like a one-question poll or donor survey can increase engagement time and nudge action.
- Layered Postcards or Inserts: A timed, issue-specific postcard – such as a reminder about charitable giving deadlines or high-impact tax-smart options – can reinforce a larger appeal and lead to unexpected major gifts.
- Personal Outreach: Mid-major donors often respond best when they feel known. Pairing a print or digital appeal with a timely phone call, handwritten note or in-person meeting can move a potential donor to say “yes” in a bigger way.
